The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana upgraded the area to a winter storm warning from 4 a.m.-8 p.m. today for northwest Ohio, northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.
The weather service reports heavy snow is expected with total snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches possible. It’s predicted travel will be very difficult and the hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commute today.
Snow was predicted to spread rapidly north early today with rapid accumulations before noon. The heaviest snow should end by late this afternoon, although some blowing and drifting snow in open areas is likely to persist into the evening.
A winter storm watch had previously been in effect prior to the warning being issued.
Individuals who must travel are advised to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency.
The Henry County Senior Center announced it will be closed today. All of the scheduled activities including blood pressure checks, the Ohio Department of Transportation/health department round-about presentation, birthday bash lunch sponsored by Frost Insurance and bingo will all be moved to Friday.
Senior monthly food boxes that are picked up at the transportation department will be pushed back to next Wednesday, Feb. 1.
If snow emergency levels are issued for the county, level one indicates caution should be used because roads are slippery and there may be drifting snow. A level two includes the recommendation that motorists don’t travel if they don’t need to because the roads are becoming more snow covered with drifting. Level three is when all roads are closed to non-emergency personnel.
