MARION TOWNSHIP — A garage was destroyed and a house sustained damage in a Monday evening fire.

The Hamler-Marion Township Fire Department responded to 8-695 County Road Y at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday. Fire Chief Kevin Niemeyer said the fire was in a detached garage and spread into the house.

“The garage was completely gone when we got there, and we got the fire stopped before it got into the house too far,” Niemeyer said. Approximately 4,000-5,000 gallons of water was used in the response.

Niemeyer said the house was damaged by the fire and is not currently habitable. He also reported the residents of the home were not injured and one firefighter sustained a slight injury that was treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, and Niemeyer said the State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene Tuesday morning. At this time, the cause does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

Crews were on scene for approximately three hours. Mutual aid was provided by Leipsic Fire Department, Corn City Fire District (Deshler) and Hamler EMS. Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene with the county’s air trailer.
