DEFIANCE — Authorities Thursday recovered the body of a man from the Auglaize River who was missing since earlier this week.

According to Defiance Police Chief Todd A. Shafer, the police department, Defiance Fire Department, Defiance County Sheriff’s Office, Toledo Fire and Rescue and the Ohio Department of Resources were preparing to search the Auglaize River for Saul Lopez Rocha, who was reported missing Tuesday. The department received a report at approximately 9:30 a.m. Thursday that a possible body was located in the Auglaize River near the railroad bridge. Shafer reported Toledo Fire and Rescue and Ohio Department of Natural Resources located and recovered the body of a deceased male subject, who was positively identified as Rocha, who was suspected as being involved in a vehicle crash in the 800 block of Summit Street in which the driver of the vehicle fled the scene after striking a residence. That case remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene of the search and recovery were the Black Swamp Search and Rescue Team, the Independent K9 SAR Unit and the Defiance County Coroner’s Office.
