NAPOLEON — Napoleon slogged through a near-30-minute top half of the first inning, but responded in the second inning to take a two-run lead.
But the Wildcats’ only six runs came in that second frame and they conceded a pair of runs in the sixth inning in falling 7-6 to Bowling Green in Northern Lakes League action Tuesday at Booster Field.
Battling a small, unforgiving strike zone, Trey Rubinstein walked four batters and was responsible for all four first-inning runs in 1/3 inning of work to open the game for Napoleon.
However, Owen Espinoza entered in relief for Rubinstein and finished the first inning with consecutive groundouts to shortstop and fired a quick second frame with three more groundouts to short.
Espinoza, who allowed the two sixth-inning runs, allowed three runs — two earned — on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Napoleon batted through its lineup in its second-inning response.
Parker Woods and Zach Ehlers ignited the six-run frame with back-to-back singles through the left side and Blaine Ford moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Espinoza walked to load the bases and Bryce Martinez’s grounder to to short was booted to keep the bases full and score a run.
Rubinstein beat out a slow-hopper in the infield to score a second run and Devin Dietrich’s bases-loaded walk scored another run. Blake Wolf gave the Cats a 5-4 lead, as he ripped a two-RBI single down the third-base line. Lucas Gerken followed with a full-count single on the left-field line for a 6-4 lead after battling through a long at-bat.
Bowling Green loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning, but Napoleon got out of the jam without allowing a run. Espinoza struck out a Bobcats batter, followed by a fielder’s choice throw home and an inning-ending groundout to second base.
But despite out-hitting BG 9-6, Napoleon was unable to overcome four errors in the league loss.
The Wildcats (10-14-1, 2-12 NLL) host today’s Bryan-Maumee winner in a Division II district quarterfinal at 5 p.m. Friday at Booster Field.
