Sylvia (Bernal) Leal, 59, of Fostoria, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021, at the Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay, surrounded by her family.
She was born on Aug. 17, 1961, in Findlay to Ismael and Maria (Carmona) Bernal. She married Terrence F. “Terry” Hoening on Jan. 3, 1983, at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, and to that union they had two children: Melissa and Terrence. She then married Abel Leal Jr. on Sept. 21, 2001, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Van Wert, and he survives in Fostoria.
Also surviving is her mother, Maria Bernal, San Antonio, Texas; two children, Melissa T. (John) Trout, Cincinnati, and Terrence T. (Kelly) Hoening, Fostoria; grandson on the way, Cade Tobias Hoening; step son, Michael D. Leal, Colorado; seven siblings, Marvin (Yolanda) Bernal, Fostoria, Bob (Krista Hammer) Bernal, Findlay, Alice (Butch) Gonzales, Federal Way, Washington, Raul (Rachel) Bernal, San Antonio, Estela Bernal, San Antonio, John (Brenda) Bernal, Fostoria, and Rose (Raymond) Valdez, San Antonio; several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly; and a grand dog, Pluto.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ismael Bernal (2014); and brothers, Joe Bernal (2001), Mike Bernal (2018), Mario Bernal (2018); and a sister, Aurora “Birdie” Robinson (2019).
Sylvia was a 1980 graduate of St. Wendelin Catholic High School, a 1986 graduate of the Tiffin Academy of Hair Design and a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria. She enjoyed gardening, painting, going on walks and cooking meals for her family. She also enjoyed her friendship with the “80s Ladies.” Sylvia had a heart of gold and will be remembered for her bright smile, kindness and generosity to everyone.

Visitation is from 2–4 and 6–8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, at Hoening & Son Funeral Home, 133 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, Ohio 44830, where a Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Wendelin Catholic Cemetery. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed on the St. Wendelin Parish Facebook Page.
