WAUSEON — The Lady Indians scored a pair of goals in the final seven minutes of the first half to break open a close game and pull away for a 5-0 win over Napoleon Monday at Wauseon High School.

Leading 1-0, Kadence Carroll made a long pass past the Napoleon defense to Abby Smith, who found the back of the net with 6:58 remaining in the first half.

Smith scored her third goal of the half two and half minutes later, with Rylee Vasvery assisting on another long pass through the Napoleon defense for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Wauseon opened the scoring with a goal by Smith at the 22-minute mark, but the Lady Cats responded and had several scoring chances.

Kari-Anne Lindberg’s blast from 30 yards out was tipped just high and banged off the crossbar less than two minutes after the Lady Indians’ first goal.

With 11 1/2 minutes left in the first half, Napoleon had solid scoring chances on back-to-back corner kicks. Josie Morales had both, with her first knocked away by Wauseon defender Eva Menetti and the second — a header — going just wide of the net.

Wauseon added a pair of goals in the second half, with Ellie Rodriguez scoring off an assist from Carroll for a 4-0 lead and Vasvery capping the scoring after Carroll’s third assist of the match.

Marie Hutchinson had four saves for the shutout.
