WHITEHOUSE — Elise Bender’s desperation near half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer ended Napoleon’s 31-game Northern Lakes League win streak Friday night at Anthony Wayne High School.

The Lady Generals rallied from 11 points down with 5 1/2 minutes left in the game to defeat the Lady Cats 51-50.

Bender’s triple was the ninth 3-pointer of the game for Anthony Wayne, which made five shots from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.

“They made a lot of plays, especially in the fourth quarter,” Napoleon coach Corey Kreinbrink said of the Lady Generals, who are now 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the NLL. “Some times that was because they were tougher than we were. Other times we just didn’t make the play.

“We are not invincible,” added Kreinbrink. “We lost a league game, it is not the end of the world. We’re a good team, but we have got to learn that when you go on the road you have to show up right away.”

Tied at 8 after the first quarter, Napoleon trailed Anthony Wayne 17-11 after a banked-in 3-pointer by Payton Miller with three minutes left in the first half.

The Lady Cats answered with an 11-2 run to end the half for a 22-19 lead at intermission. Sophie Chipps scored 7 points during the run, including a 3-pointer.

Napoleon was 9 of 10 from the foul line in the first half.

Emma Pedroza, who did not score in the first half, scored the first two baskets of the third quarter. She also scored the final five points of the period, capping a 7-0 Napoleon run with a triple with two seconds remaining for a 36-26 lead.

Pedroza’s 3-point play with 5:28 remaining in the game pushed the Lady Cats’ lead to 44-33. However, the Lady Generals went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to re-take the lead.

Bender hit two triples during the run and also added a 3-point play.

Chipps gave the Lady Cats back the lead, with a driving lay-up with 1:33 left on the clock. Two free throws by Chipps gave Napoleon a 48-45 lead with 44.8 seconds remaining.

Ella Tassler made it a 4-point game by making one of two foul shots with 11.4 seconds on the clock, but Jenna Rybicki sank a 3-pointer with 1.6 remaining.

Chipps was fouled before the ball was inbound and made the first foul shot. After missing the second, AW grabbed the rebound and called its final time-out, setting up the game-winning heave.

“I am happy about the way we responded at halftime and in the third quarter, but we have to find a way to make plays down the stretch,” said Kreinbrink.

Bender ended with 18 points for Anthony Wayne, which was 18 of 39 from the field for 46%. Amelia Womack added 12 points and Rybicki tallied eight points.

Napoleon won the rebound battle, 23-20, but had more turnovers than the Lady Generals, 16-13. The Lady Cats finished the game 16 of 35 from the field for 46%.

Chipps led Napoleon with 16 points, while Pedroza added 14 and Ella Rausch tallied eight.
